This Ain’t Your Bro’s Dubstep
Over the past four years, mainstream dubstep has built a ridiculous reputation as a masculine power fantasy, full of big drops and “dirty dirty bass.” With each release, it seemed that DJs kept trying to top one other, making increasingly bigger and tougher beats. After a few years of this one-upmanship, things have finally started to fatigue. The evolution of dubstep feels almost the second coming of the Loudness Wars. I had a ton of fun while it lasted, but eventually got bored.
Now that the Skrillex crazy train has lost some steam, we are starting to see a reaction from a new wave of EDM/IDM artist and DJs who want to lighten things up. The tracks listed below go against the grain of distorted machismo bass drops, and opt for a much lighter, more playful palette.
These tunes are packed with bubbly arpeggiators, bright synths and chipmunk vocals. Everything feels energetic and full without leaning on distortion plug-ins, which keeps things crisp and perky. If your not already in a good mood, this may brighten your spirits. Or it might just annoy the crap out of ya.
Like most good art, there is a time and a place. These jams are best played loud, in the passing lane. While using your shifting hand to stuff your face with pretty pink cupcakes.
