1The IT Crowd
With the huge following of British television in the states, I am always surprised to hear how many people are unfamiliar with the hilarious comedy The IT Crowd. The show is set in the basement of a large company, whose actual business is never revealed. Focused on the IT department, which initially consists of Roy and Moss, the first episode of the show introduces the guys to their new, and completely clueless, boss Jen. With only three main characters (and one supporting character in the CEO Doug), viewers can truly appreciate the witty banter and comical mischief the crew gets into.
By far the gem of the show has to be Maurice Moss, played by Richard Ayoade. Ayoade is probably best known for his latest role as Jamarcus in The Watch alongside Ben Stiller, Jonah Hill and Vince Vaughn. Moss is one of the funniest and most socially awkward characters I have ever seen on any screen. He is the type of “nerd” that would fit perfectly into an established show, such as Big Bang Theory, without skipping a beat.
The characters’ interaction with one another is what makes The IT Crowd work so seamlessly. Every connection in the show is nothing short of hilarious. From larger relationships such as Roy and Moss with Jen, to the smaller ones such as the entire IT department almost ignoring the gothic Richmond next door (played by Mighty Boosh writer and actor Noel Fielding).
Starting in 2006, The IT Crowd lasted four series without losing an ounce of its comedic beauty. Other countries have tried to reproduce the IT Crowd with little success. The US version brought Ayoade over to once again play Moss accompanied by Joel McHale (The Soup, Community) as Roy. Needless to say, the show didn’t last past its pilot.
Although picked up for a fifth series, The IT Crowd creators have decided to make a single final special in 2012. While the disappointment for the lack of a final series stings, rumors of The IT Crowd movie linger on the internet, giving fans a bit of hope. Whether or not a movie is in the works, The IT Crowd will forever be one of my favorite shows, canned laughter and all.
If you have yet to see The IT Crowd, you can watch every episode streaming on Netflix! In the meantime, here’s a clip.
