Trailer: From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series

The Gecko Brothers return. Let’s remember the original Geckos and take a look at the upcoming TV version of Robert Rodriguez’s From Dusk Till Dawn:

[ This article is reposted from PureFiller.com. ]

Before we get started on the trailer, let’s quickly discuss the original film:

1) If you’ve never seen Rodriguez’s cult classic film, From Dusk Till Dawn, I highly recommend that you do so.

From Dusk Till Dawn was 75-80 percent of a “Tarantino gangster film” that suddenly transforms into a goddamn vampire movie. It was unique.

Lots of folks loved it. A lot more folks hated it. I really can’t blame them. The twist comes out of nowhere. Imagine if at the end of Reservoir Dogs, Steve Buscemi suddenly turns into a dragon and flies away from the police.

Mr. Pink... the dragon.

This is the level of “what the fuck?!” that we’re talking.

2) The original film stars George Clooney as Seth Gecko, one of cinema’s most underrated bad-asses. I say this as a fan of the man’s entire body of work: Seth Gecko is the greatest role of his career. He’s not an “aw shucks” bad guy trapped by sticky circumstances. He’s not a bad guy who only rips off other bad guys. Seth is a murdering, calculating bank robber who often points guns at children. He also manages to be incredibly likeable, somehow.

This new guy has some big shoes to fill.

3) Robert Rodriguez (director of Desperado, Machete, Planet Terror and a whole bunch of other awesome stuff) can basically do no wrong in my eyes. When people talk about “the kind of man-child idiot who laps up this stupid crap,” they are talking about me. I am that idiot.

Amazon has the Blu-ray for $5.45 as of this posting. Depending on your tastes, it is either “wonderful” or “the worst film ever made”:

Okay, enough tripping down horror-nerd-memory-lane. Let’s actually discuss this new trailer:

The new From Dusk Till Dawn TV show premieres on March 11th on Rodriguez’s new El Ray network, an English-language network aimed at Latino viewers. The show aims to greatly expand on the plot of the original film. D.J. Cotrona stars as the new Seth (the cool-headed Gecko) and Zane Holtz as Richie Gecko (his psychotic, ultra-violent brother). Together, they’re on the run from the law, making their way to Mexico, where they will presumably end up fighting hordes of vampires.

New Seth Gecko

Everybody be cool. You. Be cool.

This is looking pretty interesting so far. It looks like it will focus nicely on the backstory of the Gecko boys. It also features tons of Tarantino/Rodriguez universe tie-ins, including:

Big Kahuna Burger (That's that Hawaiian Burger Joint)

New Dusk Till Dawn Family

Returning From Dusk Till Dawn 2 star, Robert “T-1000” Patrick. Sorry Robert, it’s how they know you.

Benny's World of Blood

Benny’s “World of Blood”

From this trailer I only see two downsides. First, it looks a little “CW network” cheesy at times. Don’t get me wrong, I love silly/intentionally dumb Rodriguez stuff, but this might step over the line.

Second, I am not seeing any Cheech Marin yet. Where is my Cheech? The man was a crucial element in the original film.

Movie Spoilers and NSFW:

No matter what, the pilot of the TV show is set to have a big-screen world premiere at South By Southwest this year. I can’t wait to see more.
