0STAY INDOORS: Hulu’s Criterion Collection is Free This Weekend
Fellow film buffs, I have some free-time-devouring news for you:
Criterion has a massive collection of classic films up on Hulu Plus. It’s a lot of movies. This weekend only you can watch almost all of these movies for free, without upgrading to Hulu Plus. It isn’t every single Criterion title, but it’s definitely way more than you could possibly watch in a couple of days.
This is incredible.
Here are some of my favorites to get you started:
F for Fake is by far my favorite Orson Welles project. On the surface, it’s a fascinating quasi-documentary about hoaxes. By the end of the film, it becomes something else entirely. Citizen Kane may have revolutionized movie story structure, but in F for Fake Welles basically invented “MTV style editing.” Just watch that insane trailer.
The entire film is a real-time dinner conversation between two old friends. It touches on the meaning of life, success and overall happiness. If that doesn’t sell you, one of the two guys is Wallace Shawn, the “Inconceivable!” guy from The Princess Bride.
The Seventh Seal is probably the quintessential Criterion movie. It’s a dark yet strangely comic tale about a Swedish knight playing chess with the Grim Reaper. It was one of the principle influences for modern day classic Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey. (Not a joke.)
Remember Bruce Willis in Last Man Standing? Remember Clint Eastwood in A Fistful of Dollars? This is that same “lone badass playing two gangs against each other” story again, but with samurai. It is also the best version. Toshiro Mifune is an arm-chopping beast.
A French documentary film crew follows a murderer around, and is gradually drawn into his insane world. Years ago, my buddy from France gave me the DVD of this movie as a gift. His exact words, in a thick French accent were, “Scott, I thought of you when I saw this! Look at the cover! He is shooting a baby! I said, ‘Scott will love this!’ Merry Christmas!” That actually happened. What’s worse is that he was absolutely correct.
It’s going to be one hell of a weekend. What are you guys watching?
